Formed in December 2026 in the Knoxville area, Starting September is the product of a turning point. Founded by Hollis Rivenbark and drummer BELL, now joined by lead guitarist Jeff McMurray, the band blends indie alternative textures with a “soft grunge” edge that feels both intimate and unfiltered.

Their debut single “Serenity” is more than just a song; it’s a beginning. Written in October 2025 while Hollis was newly sober, and recorded In May 2026, “Serenity” captures the fragile emotional space that follows one of life’s hardest decisions. The track lives in that in between place where heartbreak and hope consist, where clarity feels both empowering, and terrifying. There’s no dramatic over statement here. Instead the song leans into vulnerability, allowing the weight of early recovery to sit gently in the open.

Hollis who has been performing since childhood and writing since she was 14, found her way back to music during detox when she was handed a guitar. That moment became catalyst not only for Serenity but for the creation of Starting September itself. You can feel that origin in the writing. It doesn’t sound manufactured, it sounds necessary.

Sonically, serenity draws clear inspiration from artist like Phoebe Bridgers and Elliot Smith, with emotionally transparent lyricism and a restrained intimate delivery. There’s also a haunting quality in the vocal phrasing reminiscent of Neko Case. The indie foundation is present, but there’s a soreness to the grit. A “soft grunge” undercurrent that gives the track depth with out overwhelming its message. What makes serenity stand out is its honesty. It doesn’t glamorize recovery, nor does it drown in despair. Instead, it reflects the quiet bravery of starting over. For listeners walking through their own early chapters of change, the song feels like a steady hand. With several live performances already under their belt in the Knoxville area, Starting September is building momentum rooted in authenticity. If serenity is the first step it is a strong and deeply personal one.
